Importance of Multi- Linguism in Life

Ransher Raj Singh, Calgary (Canada)

Canada is a multi-cultural and multi-linguistic society where people of different ethnicities converge. April is being celebrated as a Month of Sikh Heritage. It is found that in our society, multi-linguism allows effective communication, higher academic and career success, socializing, and a better understanding of the world. It has been concluded that multilingualism provides benefits to individuals at all points along the lifespan, from the youngest infants and children to adults, and to older adults who may be facing cognitive decline1.   It is proved2 that babies do not get confused when they hear two or more languages. Instead, they develop the unique ability to understand and differentiate between the multiple languages that they hear. Their ability to learn more languages is much higher than their monolingual counterparts.

In a study conducted at the University of Columbia and University of California, it was concluded that individuals who know multiple languages have an increased chance of academic/career success over others. This is because they have enhanced literacy skills and can communicate their thoughts in a more articulate manner. One’s cognitive abilities are strengthened, making them more open-minded and flexible to difficult tasks which sets them apart. It makes them perfect candidates for jobs since they are able to focus on various tasks simultaneously. It is an excellent differentiator and reduces the chances of communication gaps. As students that are multilingual tend to be more active.

Learning multiple languages reduces the chances of a communication gap and allows for a meaningful conversation. Studies have found that this gap increases susceptibility to mental illness such as depression and social anxiety. Their cognitive recovery rate was twice as much as monolinguals. At York University (Toronto),  Psycholinguist Ellen Bialystok found that “bilinguals showed symptoms of Alzheimer’s some four to five years after monolinguals with the same disease pathology,” suggesting that multilingualism keeps one mentally fit.

I have made many friends of all ethnicities due to my ability to communicate at the next level, which enhanced my appreciation for all cultures (which is the first step to a discrimination-free society). It helped me stay strong in my beliefs and culture. This is a great way to engage with elders and learn about one’s culture and history. In addition to my knowledge of English and French, being fluent in Punjabi, for example, has been an asset in understanding my culture, learning more about my religion, and connecting with my elders! The stories of their childhood and youth fill my imagination with wonders and also help me relate to them better. Language is truly an immense portal into different cultures.
